The most beautiful section of this most beautiful park is the Many Glacier region on the northeast side of Glacier National Park. The crown jewel is Swiftcurrent Lake, a relatively small lake with a super-sized view.

Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail is two hikes for the price of one. The first hike takes you up the warm sunny side of this huge glacial bowl above Ptarmigan Lake to a tunnel just below the top of the ridge.

Swiftcurrent Trail is a great hike along a series of glacial lakes. Here is Redrock Lake, which is fed by a series of cascading waterfalls.

St. Mary Lake is another huge lake that’s 9 miles long and sits on the east side of Glacier National Park. The lake is surrounded by mountains and sheer cliffs and has the Continental Divide as a backdrop. It drains into an 8-mile long Lower St. Mary Lake just outside the park that is also very pretty. We only passed through this area, but plan to stay here when we return in a couple years. There are also many terrific hikes in this area.

The Continental Divide splits Glacier National Park into three parts: east, west and north sides. All water to the east drains into the Gulf of Mexico, west drains into the Pacific Ocean, and north drains into Hudson Bay. This region is dominated by steep mountain cliffs and glaciers. The photo above shows the Blackfoot and Jackson Glaciers nestled below Mount Logan.
