We were all alone for a half hour at this amazing lunch spot near Guadalupe Peak.

El Capitan is a limestone peak that juts out the southern end of the Guadalupe Mountains. “El Capitan is guarded by cliffs on three sides, and those faces are rarely climbed due to the unstable condition of the rock and the sheer nature of the peak. Hikers can scramble up to the summit by first climbing to near the summit of Guadalupe Peak and scrambling down to the south to the Guadalupe Peak-El Capitan saddle, then up the backside of El Capitan. A permit is required as there is no trail from Guadalupe Peak to El Capitan.” (Wikipedia)

We shifted positions during lunch so we could enjoy the different views.

Great views in all directions.

This was a Christmas Card photo finalist. We’re happy to stand on the highest point in Texas.

It’s interesting to climb down exposed mountains such as Guadalupe Peak. You can enjoy terrific views the entire way, typically even better on the way down because you are more relaxed going downhill on the well-graded trails and can watch the scenery.

You can tell Theresa loves heights, as she sits precariously on the edge of a cliff.

Another mountain to climb another day.

Oh deer!
