Sprague Lake – Rocky Mountain National Park

Mountains in Hiding

Sprague Lake is a shallow lake that’s quite popular because of its good fishing and amazing views of the Continental Divide.  Unfortunately, low-hanging clouds obscured the expansive mountain views on this day.

Named After Abner Sprague

Abner Sprague was a local innkeeper, guide and historian.  He and his wife Alberta ran the Sprague Lodge in Glacier Basin from 1910 to 1940.  They dammed Boulder Brook to create this beautiful lake for their guests to fish.  The park named this Sprague Lake in their honor.

Catch and Release

There were a number of fishermen and women trying their luck along the lake’s shallow shores.  Rocky Mountain NP has a strict catch-and-release policy throughout the park.

Trail Around the Lake

A level, wheelchair-accessible trail circles the lake, and there are many benches along the way to rest and enjoy the view.

Break in the Clouds

A brief break in the clouds opens up a surreal view above Sprague Lake.
