I encountered similar activity on the Eiffel Lake trail up in Banff. They'd walk on the trail making quiet noises before veering off. One of them I followed to get pictures, wherein she (I assume) did the broken-wing routine. It was then I noticed she had some chicks nearby and she was purposely distracting me away from them.
